Cardiovascular Risks from the Simple Anthropometric Indices among Punjabis of North India
Abha Mishra1, A.K. Kapoor2

Research Fellow1, Professor2
Department of Anthropology, University of Delhi, North Campus, Delhi-110007, India.
Vol. 1(2): pp 83-90 (2013)
Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the levels of blood pressure, its association with obesity indices and risk of cardiovascular disease with obesity indices. A cross sectional study was conducted among 512 Punjabi adults (230 males and 282 females) aged 20-70+ years in Delhi, India. Correlation was calculated between systolic and diastolic BP and various indices of obesity to see the association of obesity indices with blood pressure. Odds ratio was calculated for assessing the risks of hypertension associated with obesity indices using multiple logistic regression. Correlations of BP with all indices of obesity were found to be significant (p<0.01). BMI and WHtR were found to be the good screening tools for assessing the risk factor among Punjabi adults supported by strong correlation of BMI and WHtR with Systolic and Diastolic blood pressure and by high odds ratio for systolic as well as diastolic hypertension.
Keywords: Hypertension, Obesity indices, BMI, Blood pressure, WHtR, Cardiovascular diseases.

Vol. 1(2): pp 91-100 (2013)
Abstract: 21st century education is going through a paradigm shift where new technologies challenge our learning and modes of instruction. New literacies and new media are shaping the instructional and pedagogical practices of the global education system. An emerging technology in this scenario is Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL). Technologies like MALL holds immense possibility to increase the overall effectiveness of language learning within and beyond the classroom in countries like India, where English is taught as a second language, while engineers, content developers and instructional designers are working towards making MALL an accessible reality, English teachers should start taking into consideration the unbound potential of this revolution in language learning.
The field of mobile assisted language learning for ESL learners in India is yet to be seriously explored and instructional and pedagogical framework is still lacking. A collaborative effort needs to be made by ESL learners and teachers to make the above context a reality in India. This paper is an exploratory study about the potential of mobile learning (m-learning) in second language acquisition and teaching in India. The paper analyses the challenges, prospects and consequence of using mobile-assisted language learning, for learners and trainers in the India.

M.A.S.R. Sanjeevi Manthrirathne

Senior Lecturer, Department of History and Archaeology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Gangodavila, Nugegoda, Sri Lanka.
Vol. 1(2): pp 107-112 (2013)
Abstract: As a result of the expansion of British imperialism to Asia, Sri Lanka and India became British colonies in the 18th and 19th centuries, respectively. Subsequently due to the mode of administration introduced by the British, many significant changes were occurred in political, social, economic, cultural and religious spheres. Most of these transformations were not beneficial for the people of both these countries as they rather conformed to the British way of life. Mostly affected by these were the ordinary people while a section of the middle class society in both countries acquired the English education and were actively supporting the British another section of the same class who was also nurtured by English education worked with dedication to safeguard the indigenous identity. This section further formed the necessary background for liberating their countries from British imperialism by initiating social reforms.

Assistant Professor1, Maharaja Surajmal Institute of Technology, C-4 Janakpuri, New Delhi-110058, India.
Head of Department2, Tourism Department, P.G Government College, Sector-9, Gurgaon, India.
Vol. 1(2): pp 113-119 (2013)
Abstract: Medical tourism is a new form of a niche tourism market which has been rapidly growing in the recent years. The term medical tourism is the act of traveling to other countries to obtain medical, dental and surgical care. Connell (2006) describes medical tourism as a popular mass culture where people travel to overseas countries to obtain healthcare services and facilities such as medical, dental and surgical care whilst having the opportunity to visit the tourist spots of that country.(2)
Present paper highlights the potential of Medical Tourism industry in Gurgaon. It also helps in introspection of the Hospital Accreditation system for Medical Tourism, examining the role of Insurance Companies in Medical Tourism, analyzing the latest trend to increase the flow of Medical tourism. For analyzing the potential and significance of medical tourism in Gurgaon, the data has been collected through secondary sources includes books, magazines, journals, E-journals and websites, etc.
It can be concluded that India is in an advantageous position to tap the global opportunities in the medical tourism sector. The government’s role is crucial to the development of medical tourism. The government should take steps in the role of a regulator and also as a facilitator of private investment in healthcare. Mechanisms need to be evolved to enable quicker visa grants to foreign tourists for medical purposes where patients can contact the Immigration Department at any point of entry for quick clearance.
Keywords: Medical tourism, Medical tourist management, Medical care, Rejuvenation centers, Quality policy, Medical visa.
